So much for acting like they are just common ordinary folk....its fine to act great/nice towards others when that's how you make your living....

RHINEBECK, N.Y. – Imagine spending $250,000 on flowers. Or $20,000 on a cake. How does $15,000 to $20,000 for toilets sound?
Sounds like the first Wedding of the Century.
Wedding industry experts say that when Chelsea Clinton gets married Saturday at a private estate in upstate New York, the tab could hit $2 million, $3 million or more — a canape or two above the average $24,000 that most American newlyweds will shell out this year.

huh?  Common and Ordinary?  Why would anyone think they were that?

I can't imagine spending that much overall.  Just imagine how much they will get though, that's assuming that is the protocol for that type of wedding.  Apparently in the South, at least in this area, people give money as a wedding gift.  I don't imagine though that they'll have the little "bird house" for cards

I would actually question whether 24K is "average" as claimed.  I've known a number of people who got married, and I don't think they spent that between the lot of them.

Good point...I wonder if "average" actually meant "average for NY", or "average of those we actually bothered to ask".  Maybe they did something like posted a poll in some goofy bride magazine, and only got responses from people ridiculous enough to subscribe to bride magazines, which would naturally skew the data.

True, but a $4 million wedding will bump that average a smidge.

I don’t begrudge someone having a lot of money, just don’t travel down to Haiti and cry about how poor they are and how we all should help them then fly home and spend millions on your daughters wedding, it sounds disingenuous and hypocritical, at least to me.

I've never given anything but cash (check).. Like 25 years ago I went to my cousins wedding in Massachusetts.. I gave $150 and everyone else gave clocks and other crappy knick knacks..

It's kind of sad, because it grew out of a good thing.  In the old days, getting married and setting up a household was a BIG DEAL, and there was no cheap shit from China, either, so it was expensive.  Wedding gifts would have been a lifesaver.  Now people have so much by the time they marry, and stuff is so cheap anyway, that wedding presents are completely unnecessary and it's just an ostentatious social display.

A friend got married here and left in a week for good with wifey to settle down to another country = No material gift, only well-wishes.

A friend on a VERY low economic standing got married to a partner with the same status = Material gift or cash or both, definitely.

A friend got married but asked us to check the bridal registry = Give according to the list of the couple's choice.

A well-off friend got married with an extravagant display of everything who asked only for our attendance more than whatever gift = That's what she got, ourselves.

It depends.

I like the registration deal. It makes it so much easier on the customers guests.
